Support programs are available for students with special needs and learning difficulties as well as intervention programs to progress students up through the NAPLAN bands.

Students with Special Needs

All schools are required to make reasonable adjustments and are resourced to ensure students with a disability are able to participate in education on the same basis as students without a disability.

Programming and Lesson Delivery

At Marshall Road State School, students with a verified disability such as Autism, Intellectual Disability, Physical Impairment, Hearing Impairment and Visual Impairment are placed in age-appropriate regular classrooms and are provided with programs and services to meet their individual needs.

The case manager, generally the Special Education teacher, will develop an Individual Support Plan (ISP) in consultation with parents and other school staff.  They may also liaise with staff from external agencies and specialists.  These plans (ISP) identify and target a small number of goals to be worked towards in addition to the regular curriculum.

The Special Education teacher provides in-class support as well as individual and small-group support.  The Special Education teacher also coordinates the teacher aides who support students with their social and learning goals.  The amount of time allocated to classes depends on the individual needs of the student.

Staffing

We currently have 3 Inclusion Teachers.   There are also a number of teacher aides who support students who have a disability, both in and outside of the classroom.  The allocation of resources depends on the numbers of students with disabilities who are enrolled at the school and this can vary from year to year.

Further Information

For parents who would like a broad understanding of the support available with children and young people with a disability, please refer to the following document - Education for Children with a Disability - a guide for parents, which can be found on the Department of Education's website.
